Hotei-bori
Gold leafing
Hotei-bori (kamaboko-bori) is a carving style in which the characters are carved from the top to give them a round shape. Carving the flat panel from the top gives the impression that the characters are embossed.
Gold leaves are usually applied to signs, but this time we decided to show how the leaves are applied to a piece of ceramic. The ornamental tile depicting a beast will be installed on the roof of a temple.
Yagen-bori
This video shows the hand carving process of a tea room sign. The artisan is carving the small characters using a carving knife.
