Japanese and gold leaf signs

Tea room signs

Japanese tea rooms are decorated with traditional signs called hengaku.

At Kurita Kanbanho, we have been making these traditional signs during three generations, beginning with my grandfather, as a company specialized in traditional Japanese signs located in Nagoya. We have realized a great number of hengaku fabrication works using our skills nurtured for many years and our rich experience, while attaching considerable importance to hand carving. We are proud that our tea room signs have always brought great satisfaction to our customers.

Ordering process

We ask the customer about the installation location. We decide together with the customer on the size of the sign depending on if it will be installed on a wall outdoors or in the shadow indoors. Then, after the customer has chosen the material and the finishing of the characters, we ask them to send a digital or printed copy of the design to our company. Finally, we send a quotation for the work and wait for the customer definitive order.

Tools

Character finishing

Character finishing is realized using gofun (calcium carbonate powder) or verdigris, which are Japanese traditional painting materials. Vermilion pigment is used for the signature.

The carving technique used (hotei-bori, yagen-bori or jisuki-bori) depends on the size of the characters.
